Oct 24: To Meteor Crater

The view from the parking lot of the Super 8 in Holbrook, AZ. Fast food, and flatness.

Our first official stop of the day was Meteor Crater. At the entrance is an Apollo capsule.

Part of the meteor that caused the crater.

The crater itself. Its big.

The edge of the crater shows the stratigraphy that is typical southwest scenery.

Near the edge of the crater rocks can be found which are at right angles to that stratigraphy. Yep, that's not supposed to be that way.

The view away from the crater. Good thing it didn't hit anything important. Jim commented that, for instance, the Grand Canyon just isn't far away.

Off of the road to the crater is an interesting dirt and gravel road. One is warned.

We took it for a little ways to see where it led. It seemed to go much further than we wanted to, so we turned around and went back to the main road. Yes, there is an obvious difference between where we are and where we should be.

Leaving the crater, there just really isn't much going on. Just miles and miles of this sort of thing.

A way to tell one really is in Arizona.
